Fun March Facts:

“March” is named for the Roman god of war, Mars. However, we think of it as the beginning of spring, as March brings the vernal equinox, the Full Worm Moon, and the return of Daylight Saving Time! March's birthstones are aquamarine and bloodstone. These stones symbolize courage. Its birth flower is the daffodil. The zodiac signs are Pisces until approximately March 20 and Aries from approximately March 21 onward.

Stay warm and dry this weekend. Spring will soon be here!
My best,
Tara Winch

Hello WHS Families,

WHS has had a positive start to the new 2023-2024 school year. We kicked off the week with Freshmen/New Student Orientation on Monday. Upperclassmen were able to acclimate the Freshmen and new students to their schedules, athletic and extra curricular offerings, advice for a successful four years, and a tour of WHS. Parents attended a Panel Presentation where they met important school personnel and WHS Booster representatives. Students started Thursday and Friday with Advisory so they had an opportunity to meet with their Advisors, hand in all the necessary forms, and get reaquainted with their schedules and the daily class/school expectations. We look forward to continuing the momentum on Tuesday, September 5th which is an A Day. Also, please know that Advisory will meet every Wednesday, and will alternate between small group and grade level Advisories with a focus on the Digital Portfolio and the Portrait of a Graduate Competencies.

Friday Parent Update April 21st

Hello WHS Families,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable April Break spending time with family and friends. We are fast approaching the end of the year with many exciting activities ahead. A special thank you to Leslie Carson for representing Westbrook High School at the Education Innovation Showcase Summit in San Diego this week. Although we did not reach the Top Three, we are proud to have been recognized in the Top Ten for our Career Connected Learning and Career Pathways Program.

Classroom Observation Snapshot:

Mr. Savage’s Cockatoo visits Westbrook High School

On Wednesday, April 19th, Marshmallow,  Mr. Savage's cockatoo visited WHS and was the focus of a power point presentation for Mr. Savage’s science classes. The topics covered in the power point are related to parts of the curriculum in Biology, Integrated Science, and Anatomy & Physiology. It also touched on the chemistry of bird eggshells. The presentation included biological taxonomy (classification) specific to cockatoos: the biomes that cockatoos inhabit in Australia, their ecological niche in them, a comparative anatomy comparison of cockatoo’s and human’s major body systems, and caring for a cockatoo as a pet. Many students were able to hold and pet Marshmallow, who is calm, friendly, and well socialized for interaction with adults and children. Ms. Hoppes’ Biology classes,  Mr. Dailey’s Integrated Science classes, and a student from Ms. Lesandrine’s classroom all got to visit with Marshmallow. The Senior Citizens visiting with the Community and Global Action class also got to visit.  A special thanks to senior Carley Thompson who has assisted as the “bird handler” for the three years Marshmallow has visited WHS. In these three years, Carley and Marshmallow have developed a strong bond!

Friday Parent Update March 31st

Dear WHS Families,

It was a busy week with Seniors finalizing their Westbrook Foundation Scholarships applications and Quarter three coming to a close. Last week we celebrated being named a Top 10 Finalist in the Education Innovation Showcase Summit. Leslie Carson has provided some background information to give some perspective on our journey.

Summary of Westbrook's Career Connected Learning and Career Pathways:
Westbrook High School began its Career Connected Learning in 2019 by first developing a framework to organize the career readiness opportunities.  We focused on (1) connecting faculty to businesses to help align curriculum to workplace skills through activities like teacher externships; (2) finding opportunities for business/industry partners to come into the classrooms as guest speakers and student project mentors; and, (3) job shadowing and internships where students are learning workplace skills in the workplace environment.

In Spring 2019, we began developing a career pathways model for all of our students.  Westbrook's career pathways model is designed to support the development of career and life readiness for ALL learners and includes interconnected academic and elective courses revolving around a career theme, experiential learning and close connections  to postsecondary and business/industry partners.  The school's bi-monthly advisory periods connect students to an adult who advises them for four years of high school using lesson plans focused on academic support, college and career readiness, and social-emotional learning.

We have seen some dramatic shifts in some important school data, according to the State of Connecticut Next Generation School Accountability reporting.  Since the 2018-19 school year, the percentage of students on track for graduation in four years at improved from 73.3% to 97.5%.  The percentage of students successfully completing College and Career Readiness Courses (AP, dual enrollment, career technical education, and work experiences courses) has improved from 60.3% to 81.1%.  Student access to art courses has improved from 49.1% to 56.6%.

Friday Parent Update October 14th

Dear WHS Families,

Although a short week, it was a busy week here at Westbrook High School with academics, athletics, a major music event, and extra curricular activities. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders took the PSAT on Wednesday. Having all three grades take the PSAT in the fall gives students early exposure to the standardized testing format and an opportunity to challenge themselves in the areas of English and math. Teachers will also have an opportunity to assess strengths, weaknesses, progress, and growth in these areas once scores are released as a means to inform future instruction. Parents will be informed when the scores are available.

Here are some snapshot observations from WHS classrooms:

  • Freshman English classes worked on an organizer to prepare for the short story unit summative assessment essay.  The organizer includes students' thematic ideas  supported by textual evidence that will be turned into a rough draft for the formal essay in class next week.

Weekly Recap:

  • Monday, October 3rd- Boys Soccer Officials Appreciation Game

  • Thursday, October 6th- Girls Soccer Pink Game

  • Thursday, October 6th and Friday, October 7th- Teacher Professional Development: Over the last two days, teachers have been using a tool called the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) to assess how often students demonstrate specific life skills in the past month. The purpose of the DESSA is to identify which life skills students have already learned and which skills they might still need to develop. Once teachers identify the skills students still need to learn, they will teach those skills using lesson plans that accompany the DESSA. Our goal is to ensure that students are continuously developing the skills they need for lifelong success.

Please know that we have a new friendly face in the Main Office. Ms. Tonya Tollefsen has joined us as WHS's new Attendance/Athletics Secretary. To contact her for attendance, absences, questions, or concerns, please email her at  ttollefsen@westbrookctschools.org.
