Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we approach the end of the school year, our eighth grade students will participate in activities that will promote a smooth transition to the high school. To help answer questions and alleviate concerns that students may face at this time, the high school staff and students will be working with our 8th Grade students to familiarize them with the ninth grade course of study and different  aspects of high school life.

On Monday 14th, at 12:30 P.M., High School Counselors Jill Britton and Phil Mielcarz will meet with our 8th Grade students regarding the Grade 9 course selection process. Students will receive information about our high school course offerings, scheduling, and general information about the high school. After the presentation in the library, students will break up into smaller groups to go over any additional questions and select their courses.

Back in December, members of the Teen Leadership class spoke to the 8th graders about some of the anticipated worries that students may have in regards to transitioning to high school. They spoke about “High School Life” with the goal of creating a relaxing and safe environment for the beginning of the year. Additionally, as a way to improve school climate and make the upcoming Freshmen welcome at the high school, the Teen Leadership class also met with 8th graders today to talk about Social Emotional Learning and positive strategies to overcome obstacles. Students in need of additional assistance are welcome to visit the high school Guidance office to speak further with their assigned school counselor: Jill Britton (last names A-K) and Phil Mielcarz (last names L-Z). Also know that 8th grade students have the opportunity to shadow at the high school if they chose to do so.

We are excited about welcoming the incoming Freshmen Class of 2022 and know they will have a wonderfully successful four years here at Westbrook High. If you should have any questions about the transition process, feel free to contact me or the school counselors with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Jill Britton, Counselor A-K
Phillip Mielcarz L-Z
