Friday Parent Update January 21st

Hello WHS Families,

Although it was an abbreviated week, there was a lot of activity going on at the high school.

Weekly Recap:

  • Monday, January 17th-No School -Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Tuesday, January 18th-Teen Leadership presented their SEL progress to the Statewide SEL and School Climate Collaborative. The presentation focused on the importance of Student Voice to improve student/teacher relationships and student engagement.

   

  

 

  • Tuesday, January 18th-Dr. Martineau presented her 2022-2023 Budget Highlights to the WHS/WMS PTSO's. Please contact the Superintendent directly if you missed the presentation, but have questions.
  • Thursday, January 20th-No School-Inclement Weather Day
  • Friday, January 21st-Last Day of Quarter2/Semester 1
  • Friday, January 21st- WHS Student leaders attended a virtual CAS-CIAC Student Leadership Conference. the sessions focused on collaboration, communication, diversity awareness, problem solving and decision making.

Upcoming Activities:

  • Monday, January 24th-First day of Quarter 3/ Semester 2. Please see your Guidance Counselor with any scheduling concerns.
  • Monday, January 24th-American Legion Oratorical Contest @ 6 P.M. in the WHS Library
  • Tuesday, January 25th-Unified Basketball Tournament @ 2:30 P.M. in the WHS Gym
  • THE 40th ANNUAL SHORELINE WRITING CONTEST sponsored by the Shoreline Heads of English Departments. Who may enter:  All currently enrolled students in the Shoreline public schools,  grades 9-12Deadlines: All entries must be submitted to your English teacher by Friday, January 28, 2022. Students may submit one entry per category at the school level, but only one entry per student may move forward beyond the school.
  • Westbrook Athletic Boosters' Fundraiser, Freezin' for the Season, is up and running.  Participants must raise a minimum of $25 to participate in the plunge. You may also plunge as a family for a minimum donation of $50. If registering as a family, a family lead must be designated. The Freezin' for the Season Plunge will be taking place at the Westbrook Town Beach!

Friday Parent Update November 19th

Hello WHS Families,

I hope you are all looking forward to the Thanksgiving Holiday next week. It is fast upon us.

Weekly Update:

  • Wednesday, November 17th-Freshmen completed the PSAT 9.
  • Thursday, November 18th-WHS Bakeshop students attended a gingerbread house decorating opportunity @ Water's Edge. It is on display for all to see.

  

  • Thursday, November 18th and Friday, November 19th-Turnbridge Rehabilitation Guest Speakers shared their stories about addiction, treatment, and recovery with the 11th and 12th grade health classes.
  • Thursday, November 18th - the WHS SEL class presented to all Daisy 2nd graders  about the importance of Social Emotional Learning.

  • Monday, November 22nd-NHS Inductions @ 6:30 P.M. Prior invitations have been sent.
  • Tuesday, November 23rd-The WHS SADD Chapter hosts a "Fun Night" for the 5th and 6th graders from 5:00 P.M.-6:30 P.M.
  • Wednesday, November 24th-Early Dismissal
  • Wednesday, November 24th-OSW Football Game vs Morgan @ Peters Complex in Clinton@ 6:30 P.M.

Friday Parent Update January 14th

Dear WHS Families,

I hope everyone had a relaxing  and pleasant holiday break with family and friends. After a busy week back managing a spike in COVID numbers, healthier days are prevailing. We are also bracing for colder winter temperatures again.

Weekly Recap (January 3rd-January 14th):

  • Thursday, January 6- Advisory 9th, 10th, and 11th graders worked on their Portfolios. 12th graders engaged in a Mindfulness Activity.
  • Friday, January 7th was our first Snow Day of the New Year
  • Monday, January 10th- Virtual Junior Planning 
  • Tuesday, January 11th- Board of Education Meeting
  • Thursday, January 13th- Fire Drill @ 1:00 P.M.

  • Attention All Two-Sport Senior Athletes! Apply for the 2022 National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Scholarship by February 7! The other finalists will receive $500 and a certificate. NIAAA Section Winners - one male and one female will each receive a $1,500 scholarship and a plaque recognizing them as section winners National Winners. One male and one female will each receive a $2,500 scholarship and a glass etching recognizing them as national winners.**

Parent Reminders: 

  • As Quarter 2/Semester 1 comes to a close, students will be engaged in a variety of assessments such as projects, presentations, papers, and tests. We are not administering formal, traditional mid-term exams. This allows for more continued instruction, more incremental assessment of student progress and mastery, and less stress and anxiety.

Friday Parent Update December 17th

Dear WHS Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying this unseasonably warm weather this week. It has been beneficial for breakfast,  lunch, and class mask breaks outside. We will brace for chillier temperatures next week.

The Weekly Recap:

  • Jill Britton and Sarah Cunningham visited  Junior classes to talk about Naviance, College Planning, the Career Interest Profiler, and the In school SAT on March 23rd.
  • Monday, December 13th-The Law and AP Government classes visited the State Capitol.

  • Thursday, December 16th- Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors received their Program of Studies and Career Pathways Guide in Advisory. Ms. Carson presented an overview of the information with the guide.  https://whs.westbrookctschools.org/groups/82574
  • Thursday, December 16th-PSAT's were sent home to Juniors accompanied by a letter outlining Junior College Planning events.
  • Friday, December 17th-Mr. Saba's Law class engaged in a simulation Mock Trial in the library.
  • Congratulations to WHS for receiving the 2020-2021 CIAC Michael's Cup "Class Act" Sportsmanship Award.

Athletic Information:

  • We are happy to announce that all WHS Girls and Boys Basketball games will be Livestreamed this season!  Please visit https://www.westbrookctschools.org/groups/5743/athletics/live_events to view each game. Friday Parent Update December 10th

Hello WHS Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying the chilly invigorating days of December.

Weekly Recap:

  • Jill Britton and Sarah Cunningham visited Senior English classes to conduct post secondary planning checkups and review portfolio guidelines.
  • Wednesday, December 8th-Students completed the Portrait of a Graduate Student Survey. (Parents, please remember to complete your POG Survey.   It is available here.
  • Thursday, December 9th-Students participated in an interactive interview with Best Selling Author Neal Schusterman who talked about his new book Roxy and the writing process.

  • Friday, December 10th-UCONN English students participated in the Toy Drive for St. Jude Children's Hospital and their efforts were promoted on WPLR this morning.
  • Friday, December 10th-Unified Sports and the Video Production Team have started filming for the WHS Holiday Video.

  • Jill Britton and Sarah Cunningham will be visiting Junior history classes to assist students in creating College Board accounts so they access their PSAT scores. They will also conduct a career assessment.
  • Tuesday, December 14th-Unified Sports will compete in the SLC Bowling Bowling Tournament.
  • Tuesday, December 14th @ 6:30 P.M. Westbrook Project Graduation Meeting @ 6:30 P.M. in the WHS Culinary Room
