Friday Parent Update May 27th

Hello WHS Families,

Well here we are...the end of May and June is just around the corner!

The Weekly Update:

  • Monday, May 23rd - 8th Grade students participated in a student generated and conducted school tour and panel discussion. Teen Leadership students organized this event and obtained over 70 questions from the 8th graders that were addressed in a panel discussion. Prior to the panel, 8th grade students were organized in groups and toured the school meeting many of their soon to be 9th grade teachers. Snacks were provided and the event lasted for 1 1/4 hours. 
  • Tuesday, May 24th-Small Ensemble Concert-Select Singers, Voice Class, and Jazz Band all performed upbeat and crowd pleasing selections. Bravo!
  •  Wednesday, May 25th - Over 60 Seniors and Juniors attended a session with Post University titled "The Freshman 15 - Fifteen ways to find success in your Freshman Year". The descriptive nature of the recommendations pointed to college life; however, the skills presented were those to be successful in all post secondary considerations and all walks of life.
  • Thursday, May 26th - With the focus on Mental Health Awareness throughout our state and country Teen Leadership students pulled together a panel to acknowledge "Mental Awareness Month '' and discuss what interventions are occurring within the state of Connecticut and resources available in Middlesex County. The following panelists were invited to participate: Ms. Megan Albanese, Youth Prevention Coordinator for Southington’s Town-wide Effort to Promote Success (STEPS Program), Southington Deputy Chief William Palmieri who works with the community based STEPS Program in the schools, Mr. Ken DiCapua from Family Advocacy, Middlesex Health in Middlesex County
  • Thursday, May 26th Advisory: All grades presented their portfolios.

Hello WHS Families,

  • Tuesday, May 17th-Students enjoyed an curriculum related field trip to the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center for Harlem on My Mind about the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Thursday, May 19th-Juniors took the NGSS in the Library. Makeups will be next week.
  • Thursday, May 19th- Band and Choir performed and Senior members were recognized.
  • Friday, May 20th-Promote and Support Mental Health Awareness Month-Wear green!
  • Friday, May 20th-All AP Make Up Exams have been completed.

  • The Annual Earth Day Poetry Contest is also underway! Submission deadline is Tuesday, April 26th. See Ms. Patti for details.
  • Tuesday, April 5th-Electric Boat visited WHS to discuss career opportunities. All grades were invited.
  • Wednesday, April 6th-Shoreline Sportsmanship Conference Council (WHS Library)
  • Thursday, April 7th-Advisory: 9th and 11th graders worked on Resume Builder in Naviance; 10th graders completed the PSAT 10 Pre-administration; 12th graders  played The Bean Game (Part 2 of Financial Literacy)
  • Thursday, April 7th-The Guidance Newsletter for Juniors was sent home. Hardcopies are being given to Juniors today.

Friday Parent Update March 18th

Hello WHS Families,

What a beautiful day today! Hopefully, the warm weather is here to stay.

Weekly Recap:

  • Students continue to select their courses for next year. Please know the the Course Selection Process will close on Tuesday, March 22nd. School Counselors, Jill Britton and Sarah Cunningham, are meeting with students to assist with process. 
  • Jill Britton visited Senior classes to review the Scholarship Application Process for the Westbrook Foundation. The application deadline is Friday, April 1st.
  • Sarah Cunningham visited Junior classes to assist with the Pre-administration of the Digital In-School SAT for Juniors.
  • 8th Grade and WHS Band and Chorus performed an enjoyable combined concert Wednesday, March 16th.

Upcoming Activities:

  • Tuesday, March 22nd-Course Selection ends.
  • Wednesday, March 23rd-Digital In-School SAT for Juniors. Please make sure students have a charged laptop for the test.
  • Thursday, March 24th-Advisory will focus on a different topic relevant for that specific grade.

  • Monday, February 28th-12:29 Advisory- 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders started the Course Selection Process.  Please take some time to view the Pathways Program of Studies and ask your child about their course selection.
  • You should have received the School Counseling Newsletter on Thursday, February 24th which contains valuable information regarding scholarships, SAT and AP Exam information, and other School Counseling activities.
  • In celebration of Read Across America Day, students recorded reading books that Daisy students could watch.

I hope everyone enjoyed the warm temperatures this week and survived the blustery wind gusts last night.

  • The Morning News has been highlighted our Pathways Program of Study to provide students with specific information about the individual Career Pathways and the Career Clusters  as we prepare for Course Selection on Friday, February 25th.
  • Keep an eye for the Guidance Newsletter which should be coming out early next week.
  • Leslie Carson, our Career/College Readiness Coordinator, visited 11th grade English classes to promote Career Conn 2022 whish is Connecticut's largest one day career school expo that connects students with leading post secondary career schools, selected employers and career track workshops.

  • Community Outreach: Life Skills and Teen Leadership collected clothes and food to assist migrant workers at Clinton Nursery. Clinton Nursery (Co-owner Michael Richards), has opened its door to work with the WHS vocational students.                                                              

  

  • Saturday, February 19th @ 12 noon WHS Girls Basketball vs. East Hampton @ EHHS in the first round of the Shoreline Conference.

Hello WHS Families,

I hope you are enjoying this sunny temperate weather! As Mother Nature has quick to change for Sunday as snow is in the forecast for Super Bowl Sunday.

Here's the Weekly Recap:

  • Tuesday, February 8th- Arts Management Panel moderated by Joshua Kelly from Junior Achievement for students interested in Arts Management Careers. Panel members included Anne Butler Rice, Education Manager of the Wadsworth Atheneum; Caitlin Daly-Gonzales, Education Director at the New Haven Symphony Orchestra; Nicole Nieves, General Manager at Theater Works. 
  • Advisory: Seniors were introduced to the Scholarship process and available Westbrook Foundation and Local Scholarships. 9th, 10th,and 11th graders participated in a Goal Setting Activity. 
  • Teachers will be making course recommendations for the Course Selection process to start on February 25th.

Friday Parent Update February 4th

Hello WHS Families,

I hope everyone has had a safe and healthy week. Today's balmy temperatures will be short  lived and a sudden temperature drop will be cause for safe travel. As a result, all afterschool and evening activities have been cancelled for today. 

Here's the Weekly Recap:

  • Wednesday, February 2nd-World Read Aloud Day-Students from the Community/Global Awareness Class, Advanced Theater Class, and Study halls participated video recordings of them reading the first chapter of middle  level Nutmeg books. The video clips will be shared with the WMS Librarian and 5th Grade Language Arts teachers so students have an opportunity to get a sneak peak at popular books they may be interested in reading.

                           

  •  Wednesday, February 2nd-Goundhog Day-Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow so will endure 6 more weeks of winter.
  • Thursday, February 3rd- Early dismissal-Professional Development for teachers. Teachers engaged in the Portrait of a Graduate Survey results and worked on mid year SLO data to monitor and assess student progress.
  • Friday, February 4th-Heart Healthy Day-Wear Red! Donate a $1 for the American Heart Association

Dear Westbrook High School Families,

We are out of the gate and into Quarter 3/Semester 2! Hopefully,  we will be able to get out of our driveways with the impending snow storm!

Although it was an abbreviated week, there was a lot of activity going on at the high school.

  • Monday, January 17th-No School -Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Tuesday, January 18th-Teen Leadership presented their SEL progress to the Statewide SEL and School Climate Collaborative. The presentation focused on the importance of Student Voice to improve student/teacher relationships and student engagement.

   

  

 

  • Tuesday, January 18th-Dr. Martineau presented her 2022-2023 Budget Highlights to the WHS/WMS PTSO's. Please contact the Superintendent directly if you missed the presentation, but have questions.

  • Friday, January 21st- WHS Student leaders attended a virtual CAS-CIAC Student Leadership Conference. the sessions focused on collaboration, communication, diversity awareness, problem solving and decision making.

  • THE 40th ANNUAL SHORELINE WRITING CONTEST sponsored by the Shoreline Heads of English Departments. Who may enter:  All currently enrolled students in the Shoreline public schools,  grades 9-12Deadlines: All entries must be submitted to your English teacher by Friday, January 28, 2022. Students may submit one entry per category at the school level, but only one entry per student may move forward beyond the school.
  • Westbrook Athletic Boosters' Fundraiser, Freezin' for the Season, is up and running.  Participants must raise a minimum of $25 to participate in the plunge. You may also plunge as a family for a minimum donation of $50. If registering as a family, a family lead must be designated. The Freezin' for the Season Plunge will be taking place at the Westbrook Town Beach!

Friday Parent Update November 19th

Hello WHS Families,

I hope you are all looking forward to the Thanksgiving Holiday next week. It is fast upon us.

Weekly Update:

  • Wednesday, November 17th-Freshmen completed the PSAT 9.
  • Thursday, November 18th-WHS Bakeshop students attended a gingerbread house decorating opportunity @ Water's Edge. It is on display for all to see.

  

  • Thursday, November 18th and Friday, November 19th-Turnbridge Rehabilitation Guest Speakers shared their stories about addiction, treatment, and recovery with the 11th and 12th grade health classes.
  • Thursday, November 18th - the WHS SEL class presented to all Daisy 2nd graders  about the importance of Social Emotional Learning.

I hope everyone had a relaxing  and pleasant holiday break with family and friends. After a busy week back managing a spike in COVID numbers, healthier days are prevailing. We are also bracing for colder winter temperatures again.

Parent Reminders: 

  • As Quarter 2/Semester 1 comes to a close, students will be engaged in a variety of assessments such as projects, presentations, papers, and tests. We are not administering formal, traditional mid-term exams. This allows for more continued instruction, more incremental assessment of student progress and mastery, and less stress and anxiety.

Dear WHS Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying this unseasonably warm weather this week. It has been beneficial for breakfast,  lunch, and class mask breaks outside. We will brace for chillier temperatures next week.

  • Jill Britton and Sarah Cunningham visited  Junior classes to talk about Naviance, College Planning, the Career Interest Profiler, and the In school SAT on March 23rd.
  • Monday, December 13th-The Law and AP Government classes visited the State Capitol.

  • Jill Britton and Sarah Cunningham visited Senior English classes to conduct post secondary planning checkups and review portfolio guidelines.
  • Wednesday, December 8th-Students completed the Portrait of a Graduate Student Survey. (Parents, please remember to complete your POG Survey.   It is available here.
  • Thursday, December 9th-Students participated in an interactive interview with Best Selling Author Neal Schusterman who talked about his new book Roxy and the writing process.

  • Friday, December 10th-UCONN English students participated in the Toy Drive for St. Jude Children's Hospital and their efforts were promoted on WPLR this morning.
  • Friday, December 10th-Unified Sports and the Video Production Team have started filming for the WHS Holiday Video.
